Major media companies and publisher networks are now treating AI chat sessions and answer engines as new inventory for advertis­ers. According to Playwire’s strategy team, publishers are moving beyond the click-economy and earning revenue when AI chatbots cite their content, not just when users click through.

A few key models emerging:

  • Citation-based revenue sharing: Publishers earn when their content is referenced by AI systems instead of just viewed on their pages.

  • Chat-integration ad units: Some networks are embedding ads within AI chat responses or linking to sponsored content within AI responses.

  • Agentic ad products: Publishers are offering “AI-driven ad studios” that generate campaign assets, embed them in chat experiences, and optimise them in real time.

Why it matters for marketers
