GOOGLE DEEPMIND STAFF CALL FOR END TO MILITARY CONTRACTS
In May 2024, approximately 200 employees at Google DeepMind, about 5% of the division, signed a letter urging the company to cease its military contracts, citing concerns over the use of AI technology for warfare.
The letter, as reported by Time magazine, emphasises that the employees’ concerns are not about specific geopolitical conflicts but highlight Google's defence contract with the Israeli military, Project Nimbus.
This project involves AI-driven mass surveillance and targeting in Gaza, raising ethical questions. The letter underscores internal tensions at Google between its AI division, DeepMind, and its cloud business, which sells AI services to military clients.
It also references a 2014 agreement by DeepMind's leaders to keep its AI technology free from military or surveillance use.
Employees are calling for Google to investigate claims about the use of its cloud services by militaries, halt military access to DeepMind’s technology, and establish a governance body to prevent future military use.
Despite these calls, Google has not provided a significant response, reflecting a growing internal conflict over ethical AI usage and military involvement
