How Googleā€™s AI Mode Impacts Search Ads

Google AI Mode Is Hereā€”How Will Ads Work?

Google is testing the idea of adding ads to its new AI-powered search feature, AI Mode. This comes after the rollout of AI Overviews, which already include ads, and is another step toward reshaping how search works. AI Mode, currently in beta, is designed to answer complex questions by running multiple searches at once and giving users detailed, conversational-style responses. Instead of just listing links, it aims to provide direct answers right in the search results.

Itā€™s no surprise Google wants to monetise this experience. Ads have been part of AI Overviews since October, appearing below the AI-generated responses with a ā€œSponsoredā€ label. These ads pull from existing Search and Shopping campaigns, making them highly relevant to user queries. For now, theyā€™re only available on mobile in the U.S., but Google says early feedback has been positive.

Not everyone is sold on the idea of ads in AI Mode, though. Some marketers, like Melissa Mackey from Compound Growth Marketing, believe ads in AI Overviews work because they align well with what users are looking for. But in AI Mode, ads could feel more intrusive. Others, like Navah Hopkins from Optmyzr, worry that AI Mode might reduce the need to click on ads altogether. If the AI gives a complete answer upfront, why would someone bother clicking? Plus, thereā€™s the concern that ad costs will go up, making it harder to get a strong return on investment.

For marketers, this shift presents both challenges and opportunities. With Googleā€™s AI taking centre stage in search results, businesses will need to focus on optimising their content to influence AI-generated answers. According to experts, this means prioritising structured data, optimising for search intent rather than just keywords, and keeping content up to date.

Googleā€™s AI favours authoritative sources, so brands that build credibility and provide clear, relevant information have the best shot at being featured. This means businesses should focus on publishing expert-backed content, citing reliable sources, and ensuring their website is technically sound and easy to navigate. Reviews, social proof, and strong engagement also play a role in signalling trustworthiness to Googleā€™s AI.

As Google keeps experimenting, one thing is clearā€”search is evolving fast, and advertising is evolving with it. Whether this change reshapes the industry or just adds another layer to search marketing, advertisers and businesses need to stay flexible, test new strategies, and adapt to the AI-driven future.

AI USE CASE OF THE WEEK

Create an AI Clone that Speaks, Thinks, and Acts Like You

Imagine having an AI clone of yourself that can respond to your audience as if you were personally guiding them. This AI doesn't just share your knowledge; it mimics your communication style, your values, and even your personal experiences. The result? An AI-powered coach that feels exactly like you.

Your Voice & Tone

Describe your tone: Is it conversational, authoritative, humorous, or motivational? Be specific about how you engage with your audience. Do you keep things light and friendly, or are you more formal and professional? Do you tend to be empathetic, bold, or direct?

Language Style & Phrasing

How do you typically phrase things? Do you use short, punchy sentences or longer, detailed explanations? What idiomatic expressions or specific language do you often use? How do you explain difficult concepts? Do you simplify or break things down into actionable steps?

Core Beliefs, Values, & Principles

What do you believe in, professionally or personally, that shapes how you respond to challenges and advice? What values drive you? How do you approach customer relationships or business growth? Whatā€™s your philosophy in life and work?

Work Background & Key Experiences

Whatā€™s your professional background? What key experiences have shaped how you think and approach your work? How did you get to where you are today? Include any notable career moments, lessons learned, or projects that have influenced your approach.

Approach to Problem Solving

How do you typically solve problems or offer advice? Do you focus on high-level strategies, or do you prefer to get into the nitty-gritty? Do you recommend specific tools or techniques? How do you break down a problem to help your audience understand it and take action?

Desired Outcomes & Conversations with the AI Clone

What are the main goals you want your AI clone to achieve? Do you want it to motivate, educate, or guide your audience? What kind of conversations would you like the AI to engage in with your audience? Should it always provide actionable advice, or should it sometimes just listen and provide support?

Provide Reference Materials for Context

To help your AI clone sound just like you, compile 10-12 examples of content youā€™ve already created, such as:

  • Previous LinkedIn posts

  • Instagram captions

  • Comment responses

  • Emails or blog posts

Save these examples as a PDF and provide it to your GPT as reference material. This will ensure it gets your tone, personality, and knowledge spot-on.
