AI TOP STORY

Is CPA the New King of Digital Ads?

Ads That Only Cost You If They Close A Sale

Here’s a thought that should make search marketers a little sweaty: what happens when ads aren’t just displayed or clicked, but done for you by your AI? No scrolling, no choosing, no comparing flight times and hotel options. Just a helpful agent that decides, books, and moves on. If that’s the future (and let’s be honest, we’re already halfway there), the old CPM and CPC models are toast.

We’ve been clinging to impressions and clicks for decades because frankly, CPA has always felt a bit like the prom date that never showed up. Everyone wanted it, but no one could prove it actually worked. Attribution was a mess, conversions got murky, and most advertisers settled for what was easy to measure, not what actually mattered.

But now? AI agents change the equation. If your assistant books the flight, hotel, and dinner without you ever seeing a traditional ad, the value exchange is crystal clear: this brand got the sale. That one didn’t. Suddenly, CPA isn’t just viable, it’s obvious.

Picture this: you say “I want to go to Paris in October,” and your AI goes to work. It picks an airline, books a boutique hotel in Le Marais, and maybe even reserves a dinner cruise on the Seine. Behind the scenes, the brands that got selected pay a CPA fee. No bidding for ad slots. No SEO games. Just: did your product win? Cool, pay up.

Of course, that raises the usual trust questions. Will AI agents start favoring whoever ponies up the most money? Will we need some kind of ‘sponsored by’ tag on our robot’s recommendations? Probably. But we’ve already lived through this with Google, and guess what, people still use it. Because at the end of the day, usefulness trumps everything. If the rec is legit, no one cares how it got there.

So yeah, as AI agents get better at making decisions for us, they’re also going to rewrite how we think about attention, intent, and value. Maybe we stop measuring the stuff around the sale and start paying for the sale.

ONE QUICK AI HACK

Are Your ChatGPT Conversations Actually Private?

If you're using ChatGPT’s "Share Chat" feature, be aware: shared chats were publicly visible and searchable on Google - and in some cases, they still might be.

Until early August 2025, if you created a share link and left it set to public (via the “Make this chat discoverable” toggle), that URL behaved like any other public webpage. Search engines could crawl and index it. Tools like Ahrefs and Semrush uncovered thousands of indexed ChatGPT conversations—some containing surprisingly sensitive material.

What This Means:

  • Previously shared conversations may still appear in Google search results

  • Client data, internal docs, or private prompts could still be exposed if shared publicly before August 2025

  • Anyone with a shared link can still access the full conversation

What’s Changed (as of August 2025):

  • OpenAI has removed the “Make this chat discoverable” option, meaning new shared links are no longer indexed

  • They're also working with search engines to de-index previously public links, but this may take time

🔐 How to Stay Safe:

  • Audit your previously shared chats - especially those shared before August 2025

  • Delete or regenerate sensitive share links if you're unsure

  • Treat all AI share links like publishing a blog post - if it’s public, assume it could be found

  • For cleanup, use Google’s Remove Outdated Content tool

This doesn’t affect your regular, unshared chats. But if you've used the Share feature at any point, it's worth taking a second look.
