AI TOP STORY

OpenAI’s Next Big Model Is On Hold

Sam Altman Hits Pause Due To Risky Model Behaviour

OpenAI has been preparing an “open-weight” model, a downloadable version of its AI that developers can run on their own servers.

This gives businesses more control to fine-tune the model, keep sensitive data private, and cut down on API costs. That level of privacy and flexibility is especially valuable in industries like finance and healthcare, where compliance is critical. It also appeals to companies running thousands of queries a day, giving them speed and autonomy without relying on OpenAI’s servers.

This is OpenAI’s first open-weight release since GPT‑2 back in 2019. Since the March announcement, anticipation has been building among enterprises, governments, and startups eager to innovate without being tied to a single provider.

But the rollout has already been delayed twice, with no confirmed release date. Sam Altman explained the pause comes down to safety. Once model weights are released, they can’t be taken back, and OpenAI wants more time to test for edge cases and strengthen safeguards against misuse.

That extra care comes with good reason too. Earlier this year, xAI’s Grok model made headlines for generating antisemitic content in an unfiltered mode. OpenAI is determined to avoid similar problems as it works to position itself as a responsible leader in AI.

But beyond safety, OpenAI knows this release could be a big win strategically. Open-weight models help the company stay competitive with rivals like Meta’s LLaMA, which has also released open-weight models, and appeal to developers and researchers eager for more flexibility.

For OpenAI, getting this right isn’t just about caution - it’s about staying ahead in an industry moving faster than ever.

AI USE CASE OF THE WEEK

Audio Network’s AI‑Enhanced Video Hooks

Audio Network is using AI to scan its huge music library and flag tracks with the right mood, tempo, and energy for video intros. Once the AI delivers a shortlist, human experts step in to fine‑tune the selections, ensuring they hit the right emotional and cultural notes for different audiences.

Emma Pearce, Head of Branded Content UK, has seen how automation is reshaping the industry. But she’s clear on one thing: the most effective video hooks still rely on human creativity. Drawing on her experience leading Audio Network’s APAC and UK teams, Pearce shared how audience tastes shift across regions—and why cultural nuance is key to crafting intros that resonate in the first three seconds.

How It Works

AI-powered audio scanning: The system evaluates tracks across attributes like tempo, sentiment, and rhythm to generate a shortlist of hook-worthy candidates .

Human-curated selection: Music experts vet AI suggestions, ensuring the final choice aligns with the desired tone and cultural context for each target region.

Regional tuning: UK teams choose different intros than APAC, meaning the AI-human combo supports localised video experiences.

Business & Creative Impact

Attention-grabbing hooks: Optimised to engage viewers in the critical first three seconds.

Faster production: Thousands of tracks are narrowed down in minutes, not days.

Cultural relevance: Human oversight avoids tone-deaf imagery or mismatched regional cues.

Scalable creativity: Teams can deploy emotionally powerful hooks across multiple campaigns and regions efficiently.
