OpenAI Brings Back GPT-4o After GPT-5 Backlash

GPT-4o Meant More to Users Than OpenAI Knew

GPT-5 launched on August 7 with the kind of upgrades that look impressive on paper. Stronger reasoning, faster performance, more accurate outputs, and fewer hallucinations. For power users, it seemed like the perfect next step. But within hours, feedback started flooding in from people who felt something important was missing.

GPT-5 might have been sharper, but it lacked the warmth, personality, and flexibility that made GPT-4o so easy to work with. Many said conversations felt flat and transactional, especially compared to the more natural back-and-forth they were used to.

The response from OpenAI was fast. Sam Altman confirmed GPT-4o would be reinstated as an option for ChatGPT Plus subscribers, giving users the choice between the new powerhouse and the older, more personable model.

Plus subscribers will also see their daily message limits expanded, allowing for longer sessions without the interruption of hitting a cap. And in an upcoming update, the interface will clearly show which model is replying. A small detail, but it makes a big impact when you’ve built habits around a certain tone or style.

Altman tweeted that they had underestimated the emotional connection people form with AI, and even said he was uneasy with how strongly some users rely on it for personal or life decisions. Many said GPT-4o’s encouraging, conversational style made them feel understood in a way GPT-5 didn’t.

That feedback is prompting OpenAI to also re-examine how it allocates resources between free users, Plus subscribers, and API customers, aiming for more transparency. Demand for the most advanced models is high, and managing that demand while keeping users happy is a balancing act.

From what we’ve seen in recent GPT-5 user feedback, how much you enjoy it comes down to your use case. It’s brilliant at untangling complex problems, managing multi-step coding, and tackling heavy-duty refactoring. But if you value warmth and conversation over raw horsepower, GPT-4o could still be your go-to.

Technical improvements alone don’t guarantee loyalty. The experience, how it feels to use the tool, can be just as important as raw capability. And when you change that experience, you change the relationship people have with your product.

Turn Search Data Into Content Ideas With AnswerThePublic

If you’ve ever needed instant insight into what your audience is asking online, AnswerThePublic is built for you. Originally a pure keyword research tool, it now layers AI on top of real search data to turn raw queries into structured, high-value content ideas you can act on immediately.

Type in a topic or keyword and it maps the most common search questions, comparisons, and phrases. It then uses AI to cluster related terms, suggest angles, and surface ideas you might not have considered. Instead of manually combing through keyword lists, you get a ready-to-use content roadmap in minutes.

It’s especially powerful for marketers planning campaigns, SEOs building topical authority, and content teams looking to align output with audience demand. Whether you’re scripting a webinar, planning blog posts, or creating ad copy, it helps you target exactly what people are searching for.

Why It’s Gaining Traction

Acquired by NP Digital (Neil Patel’s agency), AnswerThePublic has built a loyal user base thanks to its blend of simplicity and real-world SEO impact.
