AI Could Potentially be Undermining Customer Trust in 2025

Should Marketers Stop Using the term “AI-powered”?

Are you a marketing an AI-driven product or service?
You might want to rethink how you position it.

A recent study from Washington State University reveals that mentioning "artificial intelligence" in product descriptions can actually turn potential buyers away.

The research, which surveyed over 1,000 U.S. adults, found that products explicitly labeled as "AI-powered" were consistently less appealing. Why? The term “artificial intelligence” often triggers feelings of uncertainty and lowers emotional trust in the product. This trust gap becomes even more pronounced with high-stakes items like expensive electronics, medical devices, or financial services—categories where reliability and control are paramount.

Interestingly, the study highlighted that this negative reaction wasn’t due to the technology itself but how it was communicated. Products that incorporated AI subtly, focusing instead on tangible benefits and outcomes, performed significantly better. When marketers highlighted what the product could do—such as improving efficiency, accuracy, or personalisation—without explicitly emphasising AI, customers responded more positively.

For marketers and business owners, this insight is a reminder to lead with value rather than technology. Instead of showcasing that your product is “AI-powered,” focus on the practical outcomes it delivers: Does it save time? Reduce errors? Provide a personalized experience? These are the elements that resonate most with consumers and build the emotional trust needed for purchase decisions.

So, before emphasising the "AI" in your next product launch or campaign, consider how it might be perceived by your audience. Framing the message around customer benefits, rather than the underlying technology, could make all the difference in winning their trust—and their business.
