OPENAI PAUSES CHATGPT'S "SKY" VOICE OVER SCARLETT JOHANSSON RESEMBLANCE
OpenAI has temporarily suspended the use of the popular "Sky" voice in its ChatGPT conversational AI due to concerns over its striking similarity to actress Scarlett Johansson's voice. The resemblance became more pronounced as OpenAI CEO Sam Altman and others drew parallels between the "Sky" voice and Johansson's role as an advanced AI system named Samantha in the movie "Her."
The "Sky" voice was one of five selected from over 400 auditions by professional voice actors for ChatGPT and the upcoming GPT-4o model. While OpenAI insists the resemblance is coincidental, the company has decided to pause the use of the "Sky" voice until further notice.
GPT-4o, set to revolutionize conversational AI, will feature multimodal capabilities, allowing it to understand and generate various forms of media, including images, text, video, and speech. This multimodality enables real-time conversations and an emotionally adaptive voice, further heightening the similarities with the "Her" movie.
OpenAI has clarified that the "Sky" voice belongs to a different professional actress using her natural speaking voice and not an imitation of Johansson. The company has not disclosed the actress's name but has stated that all voice actors were compensated above market rates and will continue to receive compensation as long as their voices are used in OpenAI's products.
