TOP STORY OF THE WEEK
HUMANE AI PIN MISSES THE MARK (THE VERGE REVIEW)
The Humane AI Pin, a wearable device that aims to replace the smartphone, has fallen short in its initial release, according to a review by The Verge. The $699 device, which comes with a $24 monthly subscription, promises to provide an AI-powered alternative to common smartphone tasks, but the reviewer found it to be "thoroughly unfinished and so totally broken in so many unacceptable ways."
The AI Pin's main interface is a "Laser Ink" projector that displays information on the user's hand, but the reviewer found the user experience to be "bananas" and overly complicated. Basic functions like setting alarms, accessing calendars, and reliably making phone calls were either missing or prone to failure.
While the reviewer was impressed by the hardware design and the potential of the AI-powered concept, they concluded that "the AI Pin isn't going to feel remotely close to being done." The device's limitations and inconsistent performance make it difficult to recommend at its current price point.
Humane's co-founders acknowledged the issues, stating that the AI Pin and its underlying Cosmos AI operating system represent "the first page" of a broader vision for ambient computing. They promised future software refinements, new features, and partnerships to improve the device over time.
However, the reviewer argued that "there are too many basic things it can't do, too many things it doesn't do well enough, and too many things it does well but only sometimes that I'm hard-pressed to name a single thing it's genuinely good at." The current state of the AI Pin, they concluded, is not ready for mainstream adoption.
