What’s Actually New With ChatGPT’s Shopping Update?

What Marketers Should Really Know About This Update

OpenAI just dropped a pretty major update: you can now use ChatGPT to shop. Not browse. Not click through pages of listings. Actually shop - like, conversationally.

You can ask it for the best running shoes for flat feet under $150, or a birthday gift for your niece who loves space and baking, and it’ll serve up a curated product list: names, images, prices, quick summaries, and links to buy. It feels more like chatting with a personal shopper than typing into a search engine.

Now, you might be thinking: “Wait, couldn’t ChatGPT already do this?”

Well, Sort of. If you were using the browsing tool, you could ask for recommendations and get a helpful text-based answer pulled from articles and blog posts. But it was hit-or-miss; no images, no consistent structure, sometimes outdated links, and very little ability to understand nuance like budget, aesthetics, or niche needs.

What’s changed is that this is now a dedicated shopping experience, powered by Bing’s shopping engine. ChatGPT isn’t just searching anymore - it’s tapping into structured product data in real time, understanding the intent behind your prompt, and formatting the results into an actually shoppable experience. You still leave ChatGPT to complete the purchase, but everything leading up to that feels smoother, smarter, and way more intuitive.

And that shift from search summaries to true conversational curation, is where things start getting interesting for marketers.

Because the game is changing. It’s no longer about ranking high on Google or outbidding a competitor on a sponsored ad. It’s about being the most helpful, contextually relevant answer to someone’s question. And that answer is now being generated by AI.

So what should marketers actually do?

1. Think like the AI. Write like the user.
If your product listings are just specs and bullet points, you’re going to get skipped. This system favors listings that speak to real-life use cases. “Best for long walks on concrete,” “comfortable for wide feet,” “easy to clean”—those are the kinds of details that match real prompts. Add them in. Think scenario-first, not just feature-first.

2. Expand your presence beyond your site.
ChatGPT uses Bing Shopping, but it also reads editorial reviews, Reddit threads, gift guides, and roundups. If your product is mentioned positively in those spaces, it’s more likely to show up. So pitch product roundups. Get featured on niche blogs. Encourage reviews in the wild. Every mention becomes potential input for the AI.

3. Don’t overlook structured data.
Bing's shopping infrastructure relies heavily on clean product feeds and schema markup. If your metadata is messy or missing entirely, you’re invisible to the system powering this experience. Make sure your pricing, availability, category tags, and product specs are crystal clear and formatted properly.

If you want a quick reality check, try it yourself. Open ChatGPT, pretend to be your customer, and shop with a natural prompt. If your product doesn’t show up, study the ones that do. How are they described? What info do they include? That’s your blueprint.
